Myself and my wife Amanda had the great pleasure to have Reggie as our Instructor for several certifications. The one certification that stands out and will stay with us forever is rescue diver. Reggie is simply the best! Reggie spent the extra time and effort to make sure we knew the expectations then put us to the test. We will forever remember his professionalism and his way of motivating us both through this great experience. We not only think of Reggie as the best Instructor we have ever had but consider him a forever friend.

What can I say besides Reggie was the best. My wife had dived a long time ago, but we were both getting our open water certifications at Utila Cays Dive Center in Hondras. Reggie was the only dive instructor I’ve ever had, but I couldn’t imagine anyone better. Our group of 4 had a range of skill-levels, but Reggie was able to give us all the individual attention we needed in a calm and cool way. He said that, for him, being a dive master is like being a psychologist. And I can see why. He quickly gained a deep understanding of our personalities, sense of adventure, fears, and sense of humor.

I couldn’t recommend Reggie enough. Just be on the look out, he is pretty liberal with his Beer Fines!

  3. Genevieve Jewell says:

Reggie was the best dive instructor we could have asked for. He was incredibly patient, kind and thorough. Prior to working with Reggie, I did not have any dive experience. He made me feel comfortable throughout the whole experience. By the time I got my certification, I felt confidant in doing all the things I had learned with Reggie, on my own. I also realized my love for diving. If you want an excellent dive instructor, you should absolutely go with Reggie!!

    Another one from Trip Advisor
My girlfriend has never been diving before and she decided to take a discovery course which was taught by Reggie and she loved every minute of it. Reggie was very knowledgeable and patient which allowed her to get comfortable in an unfamiliar environment. It was a one on one course so she was able to learn at her own pace before being able to enjoy her very first scuba experience.

An amazing Trip Adviser article from an amazing person, whom I recall with fond memories.

. . . if you are looking for the kind of comfort that can only be felt when you are surrounded by people that love what they do and treat each other like family – Utila Cays Diving is definitely the place to find it. I was a fist time diver that traveled there for a week with my bf for spring break. Bogdan (the most charismatic, kind, professional, and organized person you could imagine) assigned me a dive instructor who I later grew to respect and love like a family member. His name is Reggie. My boyfriend and I started our diving certification process off the dock. During my second (training) dive and as I was performing one of the skills (the mask removal) I completely broke down in tears and gave up on the whole experience. As you can imagine, I had some serious contemplating to do over night and I decided that I was going to continue to do Discover Scuba diving for the following days (and completely stopped with my certification process) . Bogdan was my Discover Scuba dive instructor while Reggie continued training my boyfriend who ended up getting certified. The dives with Bogdan were absolutely amazing-breathtaking views- calm instruction- stress free experience. I think those Discover Scuba dives are what made me fall in love with diving. On the last day, after we came back from diving all day, Reggie noticed my excitement and happiness and asked me if I wanted to try to remove the mask and finish the (last skill of the) 2nd dive skill. I could not believe that he was willing to spend time with me after such a long and tiring day and that he was encouraging me to face my fears and assuring me that I would be just fine with his help. I couldn’t resist. Reggie and I went back in the water after that long day and that’s when the Unimaginable happened: I finally removed my mask and (re)placed it under water without a problem. As we surfaced, I was dancing and crying at the same time and Reggie got just as emotional as I did. Reggie is an absolutely amazing human being, caring person, and a very knowledgeable and capable instructor (We MISS you Reggie-I hope you get a chance to read this). The entire team is great! My boyfriend and I reminisce on the good times we had at UCD all the time. We always think of Rafa’s with his cool laid back personality, Reggie, Bogdan, Edgar and his amazing fishing/shark stories, and all of the other people we met during that trip. If you are a person that values lifelong friendships, enjoys meeting people and building relationships – you will not be disappointed. This team is phenomenal and they know what they are doing!

An excerpt from a recent Trip Advisor post for Utila Cays Diving

Bogdan, Mike, Rafa and Edgar are absolutely awesome. Although I’m not a beginner diver, I saw Reggie teaching and his knowledge and patience have to make him one of the best instructors I’ve ever seen. Edgar seems to have the most amazing ability to see things over the water, be it dolphins, turtles or even the odd whale shark.

“New Diver, Certification and Diving experience!”

    4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 17, 2014 NEW

My Cousin and I are about the same age and came to this location based on trip advisor reviews. I received my open water certification and she received her Advanced. We were there for 6 nights.

Dive Instructor Reggie: Regman was amazing (we nicknamed him that and it stuck!), I was the only one getting my open water at the time and I was able to push myself and knock the certification out quickly with the support of Regman. He would stay up past his bedtime for me to be able to get all the knowledge reviews and quizzes done faster than usual. He was very positive and very knowledgeable about diving and has been doing it for a long time. My cousin did her advanced certification with him and felt the same way! I wish I would have pushed through and knocked out my advanced also… but guess there is always next time. . .

    “Another Fantastic Review”

    5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 14, 2014 NEW

My wife and I were here during the last week of March and we couldn’t be happier. My wife had dived a long time ago, but we were both getting our open water certifications. Let’s get on with the highlights.

Dive Master Reggie – A new addition to the dive school, Reggie was one of the most incredible instructors in any subject matter that I’ve ever had. Our group of 4 had a range of skill-levels, but Reggie was able to give us all the individual attention we needed in a calm and cool way. Just be on the look out, he is pretty liberal with his Beer Fines!

Diving – I’ve never dove, but I couldn’t imagine a more spectacular dive location. The waters are pristine and the oceans are healthy. We saw gorgeous coral, snorkeled with a pod of 200 dolphins, and swam with a sea turtle, and fed a nurse shark. Plus, there was a whale fish sighting while we were there, although our boat didn’t make it in time.

Dive Center – Run by Bogdan, you’ll never have a dull moment. Bogdan is the life of the party, and he makes sure to keep that party going. After your 2 morning dives, he fills the rest of your day with beaches, pina coladas, banana chips, fish burgers, and fancy sunset dinners. Since the dive center only hosts a limited number of people at any one time, he can ensure you find the vacation you were looking for. Just be ready to Go Places, Do Things, and Meet People!

Island – The dive center is located in Hotel Kayla, which is *not* on the main island of Utila. It’s actually on Jewel Key about 20 miles away…and only reachable by a 40 minutes boat ride from Utila town. So, anything you read about Utila you might as well ignore. Some days after dives you might stop in town for lunch, a supermarket run, or ATM stop, but don’t count on it. Anyway, you don’t need Utila town. Jewel Key is a Caribbean-style town with 1 fish market, 1 convenient store, and 3 restaurants. Try them all! The fried chicken was an unexpected surprise. The dive center is always lively with a range of people socializing in the lobby.

Hotel Kayla – A review wouldn’t be complete without a note on the accommodations. It’s a bare-bones lodging. But very pleasant. The hotel is right on the water with a gorgeous deck. A kitchen allows you to cook and mix drinks to enjoy the sunset. You won’t (or shouldn’t) spend much time in your room. And so for $30 a night, I can’t really complain. We had a our own shower and air conditions. The bed did sag quite significantly, though.

All in all, an incredible experience that I would encourage all to have!

    FROM TRIP ADVISOR!

“I don’t think we could have had a better experience! Above and beyond all our expectations!”

I know for a fact that we got the BEST dive traIning experience possible. My gf and I went to UCD to get our open water certification. When someone is new to a sport, a good mentor is an absolute must, and you’ll find plenty of good mentoring at UCD.
My gf had some trouble getting comfortable with some scuba skills (mask flooding and removal), she broke down, and wanted to quit. I have never seen any instructor handle a similar situation better than Reggie. The team at UCD went above and beyond to help her get over her fears. Reggie’s caring attitude and overall approach to teaching made us feel like we were family to him. When Reggie needed some room to accommodate what my girlfriend was going through, Bogdan was right there making everything possible, and DM Rafa also helped. They were so supportive, and they made it their goal to make her experience a positive one. They never pressured her, or lost their patience. They even held her hand and took her on discover scuba dive tours to show her the wonders of diving. After those dives she became captivated, and so excited about diving. The last day after we got back from our boat trip, she decided to give it another try. Reggie didn’t think twice, he suited up and they both got back in the water (even after a long morning on the boat) and she completed her mask removal. Now she’s more determined than ever to finish her open water certification, and quitting is not even an option. The confined water portion is right off the docks (not in some pool), and you’ll get real life scuba experiences from the start. Bogdan runs the entire operation like a swiss movement. He caters to every personality, he understands what people want, and boy does he deliver. Edgar is the best boat captain ever, and his stories are amazing! I’m determined to go back and go fishing with him. We also loved Utila Cays, the people are so nice and welcoming, we are now planning a trip (with the help of Bogdan) with some dental students to return and provide some free dental work to the residents of the island. I would recommend UCD to divers of all levels, guaranteed an awesome time organized by the best dive shop and instructors. My girlfriend and I are forever grateful to the staff at UCD! We are not divers for life.
